About Us

25 Years and Counting

2023 marks a significant milestone for American Bank of Oklahoma. Over 25 years we’ve planted roots that have grown deep in the Oklahoma communities we serve. We’ve made customers for life, many of which we call friends. We’ve taken a simple idea to become a homegrown resource—one that’s not too small, not too big—to reaches we couldn’t have imagined possible. To our hundreds of banking, mortgage, and insurance customers who’ve entrusted us then as now, and to our outstanding staff who’ve made ABOK a fixture in the towns we call home, thank you.

Philosophy

“Our passion truly is helping people one on one. It’s the reason we get up in the morning and go home at the end of the day knowing we made a positive difference in someone’s life.”
–Joe Landon, Chairman, President and CEO

In every community we serve, American Bank of Oklahoma distinguishes itself as a full-service bank where decisions are made at the local level—and that’s a refreshing difference for our customers. Every day, we help folks plant roots, buy homes, save for the future, and grow or start businesses. Here, relationships run long and deep, and that’s exactly what we planned since opening our first branch in 1998.

We understood then, as we do now, that bigger banks aren’t always the best fit for those who live and work in small or rural communities. We strive to demonstrate a more personal approach to meet individual needs large or small and encourage our employees to make positive impacts on local lives and the places they call home. Yes, ABOK invests in people. But we also invest in the heartbeat of communities to keep them growing strong and vibrant.

This isn’t just our job. It’s our passion.

Leadership

“Making a positive impact in another’s life is the foundation of our business and the reason our customers become customers for life.” –Joe Landon, Chairman, President and CEO

Joe Landon strikes a stark contrast to some who envision what a bank president looks like behind a desk.

A dyed-in-the-denim business leader who’s never met a stranger, Joe is a door-is-always-open guy who set out to introduce a community banking style that offers a laid-back environment and an experience as comfortable as it is all-inclusive. This also applies to the employees of American Bank of Oklahoma, who are set up early to become leaders themselves with every tool —and a high level to trust—to do what’s right for the customers we serve.

Joe will tell you straight away that leadership isn’t about titles, positions, or flow charts. Rather, leadership is about one life positively impacting another—and that starts with leading by example. Joe believes in empowering employees to:

  • Champion and support each other
  • Help customers the bigger banks can’t
  • Make the best, most-informed decisions
  • Operate branches autonomously
  • Become involved with local causes, needs, and events

No matter which of our six ABOK branches you patron, Joe Landon’s leadership is on full display every day to demonstrate our own way of banking—and one you’ll find as easy as your favorite chair.

History

“My plan for ABOK has always been to introduce a style of banking where folks feel welcomed and comfortable the moment they step inside the door.” –Joe Landon, ABOK Chairman, President, and CEO.

You could say that finance courses through the veins of Joe Landon, chairman of the board, president, and CEO of American Bank of Oklahoma. After a successful career working for banks throughout the eastern half of Oklahoma and in Texas, Joe determined in 1997 to start one of his own. Keeping in the spirit of his love for smaller communities, he organized a group of investors and raised $2.7 million in capital. A year later, Joe opened the doors to American Bank of Oklahoma in Collinsville, about 20 miles north of Tulsa.

The Collinsville home office would be the first of five more ABOK locations in tightknit towns and communities handpicked by Joe to introduce a higher level of personal banking services. Over the next 19 years, American Bank of Oklahoma branches sprung up in Skiatook, Ramona, and Disney, with two locations in Muskogee.

Throughout this time, opportunities arose to offer additional services—this time in the areas of insurance and group benefits and mortgage lending. AmeriBank Group Benefits was founded in 2013 with headquarters in Ramona. We next opened American Bank of Oklahoma Mortgage Group in 2014 with locations in Collinsville, Muskogee, Owasso, and Tulsa.

After more than 20 years since we opened our inaugural bank branch in Collinsville, ABOK today manages more than $363 million in total assets. We are humbled by the achievements that continue to make us a bank of choice for the hardworking folks in eastern Oklahoma. 2022 marks Joe Landon’s 50th year in the banking industry—a half-century of dedication to customers, employees, and their hometowns.

We’re Better Together

American Bank of Oklahoma embraces and celebrates the diversity and differences of our customers and team members. No matter where you work with us or for us, we are committed to demonstrating an all-inclusive business experience and hosting a customer space and employee workplace where everyone is welcomed and respected.

We strive to be an all-inclusive employer without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity expression, sexual orientation, origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status. The same applies to our customers, whether they choose to bank with us, finance a home, or take advantage of our group insurance and benefits.

Our employees and customers come from all walks of life, so we work hard to not only be an employer of choice but a people-first financial choice in the communities we serve…because we believe we’re all better together.
